Two Worlds — Guru Hargobind Sahib and Miyamoto Musashi

Two Worlds imagines a fictional encounter between Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, the sixth Sikh Guru, and Miyamoto Musashi, the legendary Japanese swordsman, strategist and artist. Though separated by geography, culture and spiritual tradition, both figures embody discipline, courage and mastery.

At the centre of the painting, Guru Hargobind Sahib examines Musashi’s katana beside a woodfire. The gesture is one of trust and curiosity, transforming a weapon into a symbol of mutual respect. Around them, Baba Bidhi Chand, the accompanying Singhs and five horses ground the gathering in the Sikh martial world, while the moonlit lake and cherry blossoms evoke the Japanese landscape.

The painting explores the relationship between spirituality and martial strength through two distinct paths. Guru Hargobind Sahib’s principle of Miri–Piri unites spiritual authority with the responsibility to defend righteousness, while Musashi’s philosophy emphasises strategy, perception and disciplined practice. Their beliefs were not identical, but the imagined encounter invites reflection on the virtues that can transcend cultural boundaries.

Part of the Prometheus Originals collection, this original artwork by Arshdeep Singh brings Sikh heritage and Japanese warrior culture into a single philosophical composition. It is a work of artistic imagination, not a historical depiction of an actual meeting.

Two worlds. Two paths. A shared recognition of courage, discipline and purpose.
