Maharajah Duleep Singh by Franz Xaver Winterhalter (1854)

A celebrated oil on canvas portrait of Maharajah Duleep Singh (1838–1893), painted by Franz Xaver Winterhalter (1805–1873) in 1854. Commissioned by Queen Victoria, who recorded in her journal on 10 July 1854: “Winterhalter was in ecstasies at the beauty and nobility of bearing of the young Maharaja. He was very amiable and patient, standing so still and giving a sitting of upwards of 2 hrs.”

The Maharaja is depicted wearing a diamond aigrette and star in his turban, along with a jewel-framed miniature of Queen Victoria painted by Emily Eden. This portrait stands as one of the most iconic images of the last King of Punjab, blending Indian regality with Victorian court aesthetics.
