Maharani Jind Kaur (Prometheus Original) – Completed Study After August Schoefft's Unfinished Portrait

This Prometheus Original is a contemporary oil painting inspired by the unfinished nineteenth-century portrait of Maharani Jind Kaur, attributed to August Schoefft and preserved within the Princess Bamba Collection at the Lahore Museum, Lahore Fort.

Rather than reproducing the historical work, this painting explores what the portrait may have become had it reached completion. The composition remains faithful to the original arrangement, with Maharani Jind Kaur seated against a bolster upon an ornate carpet, while the unfinished passages have been thoughtfully resolved through careful study of Schoefft's palette, lighting, and painterly approach.

The colour palette is informed by August Schoefft's original studio practice, drawing upon the rich earth pigments, restrained tonal transitions, and luminous treatment of textiles characteristic of his Sikh court portraits. Every addition has been approached as a continuation of the original visual language rather than a reinterpretation, allowing the completed work to remain historically sympathetic while clearly existing as a contemporary artistic creation.

Maharani Jind Kaur, the youngest wife of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and mother of Maharaja Duleep Singh, remains one of the most influential figures of the Sikh Empire. Following the Maharaja's death, she emerged as Regent of the Sikh Kingdom during one of its most turbulent periods, becoming a symbol of resilience and political determination in nineteenth-century Punjab.
