Maharaja Duleep Singh – 19th Century Portrait
A historical 19th-century oil painting of Maharaja Duleep Singh, the last Maharaja of the Sikh Empire, preserved in the Lahore Museum. The portrait belongs to the nineteenth-century tradition of Sikh court and royal portraiture and offers a visual record of one of the most significant figures in the later history of Punjab.
Born in 1838, Maharaja Duleep Singh succeeded to the throne of the Sikh Empire as a child following the death of his father, Maharaja Ranjit Singh. His reign unfolded during the final years of the Sikh Kingdom and the political upheaval that culminated in the annexation of Punjab by the British in 1849.
This work forms part of the Prometheus Old Heritage Collection, dedicated to the preservation and restoration of historically significant Sikh artworks. The restoration focuses on recovering the visual clarity of the original painting while retaining its existing composition, character, ageing, and historical atmosphere.
Colour, tonal balance, surface detail, and areas affected by deterioration have been carefully addressed to make the artwork more accessible to contemporary viewers. The objective is faithful visual preservation rather than reinterpretation, allowing the historical portrait to remain recognisable as the work it was originally created to be.
The restoration provides a contemporary means of engaging with an important piece of Sikh visual heritage and the history of the final Maharaja of the Sikh Empire.
Part of the Old Heritage Collection, this restored piece contributes to the preservation and accessibility of early Sikh portraiture for contemporary audiences.
Available as a digital download and museum-grade fine art prints (framed and unframed), this piece is intended for collectors, scholars, and devotees seeking historically grounded Sikh artwork connected to one of the earliest visual traditions of Sikh portraiture.
