Akaali Phoola Singh – Prometheus Original
Akaali Phoola Singh was one of the most renowned commanders of the Sikh Empire and a leading figure of the Akali Nihang tradition. Serving during the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, he became known for his uncompromising commitment to the Khalsa, his martial discipline, and his role in the military affairs of the Sikh Empire.
This Prometheus Original presents Akaali Phoola Singh as a commanding figure of the Khalsa military tradition. The composition and visual character of the painting are informed by contemporary and near-contemporary paintings from his era, with particular attention given to the clothing, arms, ornaments, and visual conventions associated with early nineteenth-century Sikh portraiture.
Rather than reproducing a specific historical portrait, the work is a historically grounded artistic reconstruction. The intention is to create an original interpretation of Akaali Phoola Singh while drawing upon the surviving visual evidence of his period. His characteristic martial presence is emphasised through posture, expression, weaponry, and the distinctive visual language associated with the Akali Nihangs.
The painting reflects the turbulent and formative period in which the Sikh Misls had developed into the expanding Sikh Empire. Akaali Phoola Singh's life was closely connected to the defence and consolidation of Khalsa Raj, making him an important figure in the military history of nineteenth-century Punjab.
Part of the Prometheus Originals collection, this work is an original painting by Arshdeep Singh, combining historical research with contemporary fine-art practice to explore figures and narratives from Sikh history.
